Who We Are...
We are a group of concerned
citizens who very much do not like NOT having freedom of choice when it comes
to purchasing our dairy products, all farmer's products actually. We feel that
farmers should have the right to sell clean, raw fresh milk and meats directly
to the public. Why do we not have this choice? Because of the outdated laws
that were created a very long time ago to protect the public from tuberculosis
and the brucellosis bacteria, both of which, due in part to the advances of
modern science, have been eliminated from the bovine population, just as
smallpox has been eliminated from the human population. There is no longer a
real danger from these.
It is known to be very
difficult to change dairy laws in our state because large and powerful
companies in the dairy industry have a vested interest in keeping small farmers
from being able to sell directly to the public. To protect their profits, they
put out scare tactics to convince the public that raw milk is dangerous and
attempt to keep raw milk sales illegal. It is an outrage and the public should
know what is going on. But in Tennessee we also have a very gestapo-like health
department that prosecutes peace-loving citizens for exercising their freedom
of speech on these issues. These corrupt giants do not want raw milk made legal
because it would make their processing more difficult. Raw milk is a natural
product and when refrigerated, it does not last as long as cooked milk. It
should be consumed when it is fresh, within 7 - 9 days. Cooked milk lasts weeks
on the shelf and gives processors more time to truck it long distances. Nothing
that is alive is left in it and so nothing can die -- although harmful new
bacteria can grow in it. It's kind of like white, dead, watery bacteria food.
Yuck. And many times, commercial dairies can be less careful about getting dung
and bacteria in the milk, because they are going to pasteurize it anyway, so
what the heck. I personally don't want to drink cooked dung. Secondly, these
big processors do not want organic farmers in direct competition with them.
It's hard when you have a monopoly to let go of it. But that's free enterprise.
In the last 4 years, milk prices have dropped so low (except at the grocery
store) that 500 dairy farmers in TN have been forced out of business, leaving
the number now less than 1,000 in our state. It is shameful. But if the organic
farmers could sell directly to the public, a lot of farms could be saved. Some
farmers in Connecticut get upwards of $7 per gallon for their fresh, raw milk
on the farm, as opposed to farmers in TN now selling it for around $1 a gallon
to big processors like Purity and Mayfield. They can't make a decent living.
Did
you know that:
Pasteurization
(cooking) destroys essential vitamins and enzymes necessary for digestion and
absorption of calcium. Whereas raw milk is full of those, is infinitely more
healthy, and is immediately available to the body for calcium absorption.
People
who are normally lactose-intolerant or have allergies to pasteurized milk are
usually not allergic to raw milk and can digest it just fine.
If
raw milk sits out for 3 days it will "clabber" and still be safe to
eat, good for you in fact. However, if pasteurized milk sits out for 3 days and you drink it, it will
very likely make you very sick.
We don't need to tell you
all the science supporting these claims on this website, because it has already
been done at www.realmilk.com/indexpage.html. Just click to read some of the
articles. You will be amazed.
